2022 VINTAGE ✨

Our team just tasted through the entire 2022 roster. Some thoughts…

As these wines begin to trickle through the channels (wine club, mailing list, and wholesale) we wanted to get our heads around what we had in bottle. Vintage 2022 was another dramatic vintage that started off great, but will be more likely remembered for an extreme weather event during harvest.

The year began with severe drought (3rd straight year) and a small fruit set. Coolish summer weather followed. By mid-August it was reminding us a lot of the stellar 2021 vintage. But in early September—just before harvest— a “heat dome” settled over the Pacific Basin. And it got hot. Very hot.

The whole state scrambled to get the fruit off the vine—all of it from everywhere. We took extra care in night harvesting our fruit during the coldest times of the day to preserve fleeting acids and maintain cluster integrity. Even so, some loads of fruit came in looking pretty impacted by the sun.

So we did what great vintners have done for centuries: we triaged, sorted, and declassified at will. Further we employed strident (conservative) winemaking methods that routinely kept our crew late at the winery, drove up costs, and reduced volumes. But the results speak for themselves. We are proud of these wines.
